Okay Kaya – Damn, Gravity

Kaya was born in New Jersey 23 years ago, before moving to Norway, in a peninsula outside of Oslo. She approached music at the age of 15, playing guitar in her brother’s black metal group. Back in the US, she started a new solo project called Okay Kaya, where her magnetic voice weaves emotional suggestions over a minimalist background painted by a light acoustic guitar. In a certain way, we could compare Okay Kaya’s sound to a sort of blend between Mazzy Star and Ibeyi, but probably she already gave the best definition of it: “music that explores melancholy through melody and space”.

Kaya has already attracted the attention of the big boys: Jamie XX is a fan and he played one of her unreleased tracks in a recent BBC6 mix, her latest single Damn, Gravity was produced by Rodaidh McDonald (King Krule, Sampha, The XX), XL’s Hot Charity label has its eyes on her and she’s currently on tour with Tobias Jesso Jr.
