Gordi – Heaven I Know

Our crush on Australian songwriter Sophie Payten, a.k.a. Gordi, goes way back. So we’re defo not jumping on the bandwagon now that she’s signed to Jagjaguwar and her debut LP was just announced. On the contrary, we’re happy to see that one of the song we featured years ago, Can We Work It Out, has made the cut and it’s now included in the official tracklist.

The first single to be lifted from Reservoir (out on August 25th) is Heaven I Know and, hell, it’s even hard to describe its beauty in words. Let’s say that now that cover of Bon Iver’s 00000 Million makes a lot more sense. The Sydney-native artist is indeed friend and has previously worked with the Messiah of Eau Claire, maybe you even spotted her on Fallon singing background vocals for the live rendition og 8 (Circle). Anyway let’s keep the focus on this new track because it’s really amazing. The song opens with cinematic keys and haunting vocals à la London Grammar, soon enriched by obsessive electronic loops, elegant horns and a measured use of vocoder; the result is otherworldly good, with a sensation of grandeur that constantly grows along with the melody, reaching a glorious peak in the finale.

Speaking about the Reservoir LP, which Gordi wrote and co-produced alongside Tim Anderson (Solange/Banks), Ali Chant (Perfume Genius/PJ Harvey) and Alex Somers (Sigur Ros), she said: “The name Reservoir, it’s that thing that you can’t describe, that space that anxious people would probably live their life in. It’s actually an expression my friend and I use. If I’m really down one day, I’ll say, ‘Oh I’m a bit in the reservoir today’. You’re mulling everything over, and you’re sitting in all these thoughts and feelings. In order to be able to write a song I need to go to that place, but I couldn’t live a functional life if I spent all my time in there.
