Doctrine – Play

Doctrine are weird stuff. In a good way, I mean. They are a new collective out of Los Angeles and they have just released their debut single Play. It comes out hard to describe how the song sounds or what makes me feel though; theres an aura of religiosity within it, carried forward by the choral-alike vocals, but the bass-driven production is everything but church-related. It comes hard to even think of comparisons here; The Knife, Dirty Projectors or Lykke Li released in the past something in the wake of this, but while their ways were more experimental, this song sounds instead sneakily pop. The press hints that Play is part of an an imagined future, “in which fake news dominates and there’s no longer any concept of facts.” Or maybe it’s just describing perfectly the reality of these days, we just dont know yet.
