DENA – I Like You / I Lied To You

DENA wrote the four tracks that form her upcoming new EP Trust as garageband demos, before recording and co-producing them at the Midnight Sun Studios in New York with Andrew Rapaso. The Bulgarian-born, Berlin-based artist already shared a true gem from the extended play, Lights, Camera, Action, and now she has offered another taste of what looks likely to be her most refined work to date. I Like You / I Lied To You is pop at its best, bright vocals & catchy lyrics upon an addictive melody built around a gentle guitar riff and a soft bassline. It sounds to me like a stripped down version of Ace of Base and trust me, I’m saying it in a totally positive way.

Speaking on the track, DENA said: “I wrote this song in one breath in a jam with my friend Michel Collet, who played the guitar and bass. I wanted to reflect on the contradiction that love can become when there is fear of losing involved. It’s about building imaginary walls thinking that you can save yourself or the other person from heartbreak.

Going more in depth about the EP, she said: “Trust is about the moment when your comfort zone within a relationship is shaken up. I basically wanted to freeze that moment and observe it through a bunch of different angles. It’s like navigating through the calmness before the storm before you take the decision of either to freak out or stay cool and move on.
